I haven't banned any styles, but my house rules are usually something along
the lines of "no lunging punch (since it references a made-up block) and
cyborgs/animal hybrids must use normal character creation rules (worked
fine for blanka)"
When the players do not fight AS a team (all at once) I handle tournaments
in the same manner that UFC does, meaning one fight per person, per night.
This keeps the players from having to fight each other, and also allows me
to create uniquely customized opponents for them, both in the stats dept.
and the personality dept. In this way I try to keep every tournament match
interesting.
I try to keep tournament wins from putting one character far ahead of the
rest by having way more non-tournament gaming sessions than sessions with
tournaments. because of this I usually allow players to regain
chi/willpower daily instead of only after a tournament.
Knockdown rules seem to work for me usually, but I am sure to deduct renown
for using one gimick over and over. Same with dizzy rules.
I usually do have shadoloo be the main protagonist, although it has many
branches and may not appear to be shadoloo at first. Like Keyser Soze,
sometimes people don't even realize they are working for shadoloo.
Depending on the time period the game is set in I sometimes also use the
Illuminati (Gill, Urien, etc) and generally I do include the existing world
warriors, but they won't start making appearances or interacting with the
players much until they become much more powerful. besides a few small
exceptions, they are simply out of your league at lower levels.
Main exceptions being players getting in their way, players spending points
to have them as a sensei, or players spending points to have them as an
ally.
I remember one time a character spent points to have chun li as a pal.
specifically spending only a few because they were just
casually acquainted (chun wouldn't stick her neck out for the character or
anything, they just had tea and chatted occasionally)
