I'm with you on that. But I think Street Fighters are
superhuman. That's why they can do the things they do,
like punch with fire coming off of it or sometimes
have tails and wings...
I think Street Fighters are humans that have the
superhuman ability to channel thier Chi power, like
the comic book mutants that have the ability to tap
into psychic powers we all possess. This gives them
the ability, with training, to surpass anything that
humans are capable of.

Does anyone have the stats for Master Gouken (Ryu & Ken's sensei)?

Also, I'm still looking for Rolento and Dudley's write-ups, if anyone
has them or knows where I can find them.

Thanks!

This is actually the ONLY way we play, when we play Street Fighter.

Of course. That would also be cheating. Usually, what we do is that we
choose a maneuver, and then use, say, a d20 to denote initiative, and then
we reveal our initiative simultaneously.

Your reasoning is flawed, I'm afraid. Of course your opponent can do his
move - for instance, even though you are blocking, I can assure you that a
Buffalo Punch will hurt, and that a Monkey Grab Punch or a Reverse Frontal
Kick (which is main book, main book, and player's guide, respectively)
WILL hurt even though you placed a Block last in your combo.

This is not really that important because he is dead as a
doornail, murdered at the hands of his brother,
Gouki/Akuma.

If you really wanted to have stats for the guy, I'd say
combine the best qualities of Ken and Ryu and their style,
and then add an extra move or two.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Group: streetfighter Message: 15682 From: jyurkiw Date: 1/31/2006
Subject: Re: Cardless
Well, I'm not Jens-Arthur but...

On the rare occasions I've been able to get my group into SF we play
totally card-less (because I'm cheap and lazy).

Combat works like this:

1) I start counting up from the lowest possible maneuver speed.
Generally zero, but if we've got a REALLY slow guy I'll start lower.

2) When I get to your speed you move your fighter on the map one
hex/square at a time.

3) During someone's movement, anyone with a higher speed can elect to
interrupt their move and, in effect, stop you in your tracks while they
move (interrupting may happen after movement is finished but before the
attack is resolved).

4) Anyone with a higher speed than the interrupter can in turn,
interrupt the interrupter. If you have a faster speed than the original
slow person but a slower speed than the person who just interrupted, too
bad. You don't get to go yet as the guy's action just blows by you.

5) Once everyone has moved/been interrupted who wants to/has to, anyone
who has moved begins to resolve their attacks starting with the fastest
character moving down the chain.

6) Once the fastest person has resolved their attacks, the next-fastest
person who has yet to complete their movement due to being interrupted
can finish their move.

7) Once they finish moving their attack resolves and so on down the line.

8) At any time, any fighter on the map who has not moved and has a
higher speed than the person moving may interrupt the present maneuver
and move.

9) Eventually, the poor guy with the speed 0 haymaker gets to resolve
his attack. I call it "the price of being slow". :)

10) The upwards speed count continues if there is anyone who has not yet
attacked.

Additional Note: Knockdowns and Dizzies
If you get knocked down and you haven't moved yet, your speed this round
gets decreased by 2.
If you get knocked down and you have already finished your action this
round, your speed next round gets decreased by 2.
If you get knocked down and you have moved but not resolved your attack,
your present speed gets decreased by 2 for purposes of determining who
you can/are interrupting.

If you get dizzied and you haven't moved yet, you lose your action this
round.
If you get dizzied and you have already finished your action this round,
you lose your action next round.
If you get dizzied and you have moved but not resolved your attack, you
lose both the rest of your move and the rest of your attack this round.

Additional Note: Moving Attacks
Maneuvers like Hurricane Kick, Back-Flip Kick, and Double-Dread Kick are
kind of wierd but easy to handle if you remember something simple:
interrupts happen when you move. Like in the maneuver descriptions these
things perform a move, then they resolve an attack (sometimes several
attacks in the case of a hurricane kick when adjacent to multiple enemies).

Additional Note: Sustained Holds
Sustained holds also work a little strangely, but I came up with a few
guidelines for them.
If you are in a sustained hold attempting to break out of the hold
constitutes your action for the round.
If you are applying a sustained hold, the hold is your action for the round.
Sustained holds can be used to interrupt other fighters as normal.
If you are in a sustained hold and someone *else* breaks the hold by
knocking down, knocking out, or dizzying the fighter holding you you may
take an action this turn as normal. The speed of your maneuver *must*
either be higher than the present upward speed count, or an interrupt of
some sort.

It sounds complicated, and kind of is, but if you understand how either
stacks or recursion work it's easy. It does kind of victimize slower
fighters, but I figure that's the price of being slow. We had a Sanbo
fighter who would constantly move on -1 with a spinning pile driver. His
team mates would help him get into position to use the driver and his
targets were constantly getting foot swept, thrown, tripped, and
generally knocked down or dizzied.

The system really helped the team work IMO. Instead of a loose group of
fighters, they actually got a team going. It's hard to do that with cards.

People changing their maneuvers to counter what other fighters are doing
isn't nearly as bad as it sounds unless it's 1 on 1. In that case you
need to have them use cards IMO or the system becomes extremely
abusable. However, since I favor more adventure-style games rather than
circuits and arenas combat is rarely 1 on 1 unless 2 characters are
sparing or someone excepts an official challenge this way is perfectly
fine. In addition to that, people respond to changes in their
environment so it's not that far off. Besides that, the card idea always
bugged me.

I came across a Street Fighter page where all the math
was done for you one one of our "main" pages - whre
the heck is this? I have tried to find it again
without success, and forgot to add it to my favorites.
Speaking of which, someone said they were making a
CHAMPS program? How cool would that be?
What do you need to make your own programs like
this? Do you have a program that does most of the work
for you or is there a list of HTML code that is useful
somewhere? I would really like to make my own programs
for many of the rpg systems I have created.

Thanks,

Matt had a javascript program that generated a combat chart based on the
values you filled in as far as attributes and moves were concerned.
VERY useful stuff.

I believe the stuff is the Files section of the streetfighter group home

Very cool. Though no mention of Psycho-kinetic channeling. :)
It's unfortunate tthat the Street Fighter world has painted this style with
a bad brush -- that basically anyone who proactices this art is associated
directly with Shadoloo and Bison.

Having read this, it seemst that the art could indeed have much wider
adoption.

In my game Chi is life force that emanates from al living things. As a
house rule I use it to make persons more easily detectable. With a
special technique (used like a maneuver) one can try to find other
people. The better he succeeds and the higher other people's chi is,
the fighter can obtain more or less accurate information (like targets
position, current chi value, max. chi value).

Not quite. Animal Hybrids use Chi to avoid going into a rage. If one is
attacked by - what, Psychic Rage or Psychic Vise? I forget - there's also
an opposed Chi roll.

Other than that - yeah. The fighters in our campaign tend to have fairly
low Chi ratings, and fairly high Willpower ratings.

Note, however, that it is extremely cheap to buy Willpower, Chi and
Backgrounds with Freebies, while it is quite expensive - or not allowed -
to buy it with Experience.

Actually, I rather enjoyed that interpretation. It was a nasty one - and
something that I think one could use.

However, in the Secrets of Shadoloo sourcebook, it is mentioned that some
monks or other are the ones that have taught Bison the psychic attacks
that he has subsequently improved to incredible levels. It may be that
Bison merely took the moves he knew, and then added the psychic aspect of
it, and that the style that is Ler Drit in essence is a combination of a
Special Forces type style and some Dark Evil Monk Kung Fu.

Personally, I have no trouble with Bison's style being 'Ler Drit', and
then have some other style be more like the real world hybrid style.
Consider karate, for instance - only one style is detailed in the books
(Shotokan, in case anyone wondered), but in real life there are various
karate styles with quite separate approaches to technique and philosophy -
consider Ashihara karate, Kyokushinkai karate, and Shihan karate.

Note, however, that it is extremely cheap to buy Willpower, Chi and
Backgrounds with Freebies, while it is quite expensive - or not allowed -
to buy it with Experience.

w00t new domain!

I was thinking about maybe doing champs in PHP.

But first I'm working on a character database, which keeps you
honest when you build them and tracks xp spent so it will really be
like a character generator too.

PHP + MySQL = the shiznit.

My experience in playing boxers has been great. My character candace
does really well because all her xp focuses into the one or 2 things
she needs, instead of spreading it thinly over many.

I gave her a point in kick for when ppl start using punch defense
every round. bam! roundhouse! lol

That's quite interesting. Personally, I usually let my boxers branch out
in grabs, more specifically Brain Cracker, as well as a few of the basic
throws - (Nose) Hair Throw is a favourite there.

Ehhhmmm...

Yes. I think I'll have to say a resounding 'yes' to that one.

And while we're on the munchkinism side of things - buy three dots in
Staff while you're at it. They are a Mentor, Tutor and wossname, and gives
you a reduced cost at buying Attributes - and if you go for all three,
then that's not only Mental and Physical, but Social as well.

Sensei's not a shabby background either.

Subject: Re: Attributes
Have you ever considered why Zangief has 7 dots in Strength? The ... "man"
wrestles with Siberian bears, for chrissakes! He's nowhere near peak human
- he's way beyond. Same goes for Vega - and so on. I don't think that it
is "normal" in any way or form that Dhalsim blows flame out of his
frickin' mouth - talk about acid reflux?!

Not to mention Ghost Form, Yoga Teleport, Ice Blast, Sonic Boom, Flash
Kick, Dragon Kick, various fireballs, and so on.

In my opinion, the Street Fighter game can most of all be compared with a
"low-powered superhero" game, with a focus on martial arts, using the
classification system that the Hero game uses.

Group: streetfighter Message: 15715 From: Jens-Arthur Leirbakk Date: 2/20/2006
Subject: Re: Favoritism
Muay Thai.

In the Street Fighter games I run, the players always worry when they come
face to face with a muay thai fighter - less so than if it is Ler Drit
they're facing, actually.

The muay thai fighters don't seem to be much better on paper, but as long
as they stick to their forte - knees and elbows - they almost always get
in a few good licks before they're defeated... or IF they're defeated at
all.

The classic combo for muay thai is of course Tiger Knee - Elbow Smash -
Knee Basher (dizzy), but for starting fighters, there's usually some
variation on a punch maneuver. As we're in the habit of starting three
hexes apart in a match, the first move in a combo tends to be either some
sort of block, or something that is fairly fast and with at least three
hexes movement.

Less experienced muay thai fighters tend to concentrate on one aspect of
their art - either kicks or punches. Elbow Smash is a favourite, same goes
for Brain Cracker, and the aforementioned Knee Basher. Tiger Knee's really
too expensive - the high-ranked muay thai fighter in the last game we
played went for Dragon Punch and Flaming Dragon Punch.

For some reason, ninjas always do poorly in my games. I have a middle
ranking punch-based ninjutsu fighter (called Shaitan, but that's neither
here nor there), and he is just pants! When he fights, he usually either
misses or botches with most if not all his attacks, and he is usually
defeated soundly within four rounds - while the opponent is (nearly)
unscathed. Funny thing is that on paper, he's pretty bad ass. In reality,
not quite so much. I suppose he's a paper tiger of sorts.

Numerically and game mechanically speaking, the one super-art of all is,
quite simply, Jeet Kune Do. Though the special maneuvers list is nothing
to sneeze at, the special power of JKD (no any cost? Your cost is +1 power
point) is, quite simply, amazing.

Especially if you start considering the more unusual special maneuvers.
Thunderstrike? 1 power point for Native American Wrestling - and that
means 2 power points for JKD. Diving Hawk's one of the badder special
maneuvers - and quite easy to qualify for, if you're NAW. And JKD, of
course. Scissor Kick is a classic. And if you're really into putting the
rules into an Improved Pin until they submit, consider taking JKD as your
style, and spend Background points for Ninja Clan Heritage in order to get
access to the Ninjutsu-only Focus maneuvers. (Although it doesn't say
explicitly so in the book, we usually play with Ninja Clan Heritage as a
prerequisite to the Ninjutsu Focus maneuvers, much in the same way that
Elemental is an additional prerequisite for the Elemental maneuvers.)

The most number-crunched fighter in the previous campaign (apart from my
own cybernetic JKD fighter with Cybernetics ***** *, heaps in Stamina, and
Acid Breath and Diving Hawk as signature maneuvers - long story, but he
was of course from the future, and was sent back in time to fight against
other future freaks), was the JKD fighter fondly known as Captain KGB. (He
was a colonel of FSB, really, but Captain KGB was just that much more fun
- and ironic. Especially when he didn't bother correcting the 'KGB' part,
only the rank. "I'm a colonel! I haven't been a captain for two years!")

He was kick based. With Scissor Kick. And not much else - for what do you
need when you've got Scissor Kick? +0 +3 +3, two damage tests, and 1
Willpower in consumables cost. It's a bargain - and the maneuver is Aerial
to boot!

Eventually, he picked up a few other maneuvers - Elbow Smash is a
favourite in my games, for some reason - but basically he is Captain
Scissor Kick. Boy, did he ever loathe the time the muay thai fighter and
he went up against the Black Serpent brothers, who were Taekwon Do
fighters. Being on the receiving end of scissor kicks wasn't as much fun
as doling them out, for some reason. But that's another story.

Oh yeah, and he also picked up Spinning Foot Sweep - one of the best
maneuvers for sweeping up thugs - and it's cheap and easy to learn as
well!

Hmm... I'd better stop now, or I'll just sound like one of those "Become a
super ninja in four weeks" ads.

I'm not done coding it yet, but you will play it online via a pseudo-
forum thing that automates certain tasks...

Most likely there will be no cyborgs or animal hybrids (due to
balance), "Lunging Punch" along with "Blind" will probably be
dissalowed (due to rules ambiguity), and we'll use the steve wieck
cartwheel kick errata.

Ler Drit, and Spanish Ninjitsu are allowed, provided your background
takes them into account. (Just like the last one,

All styles from the books.

I only mentioned Ler Drit and Spanish Ninjitsu specifically because
there is inherently some question as to whether or not they are
available.

Yeah. JKD is kinda overpowering in a standard campaign, but it's effects
aren't really felt in a single tourney.

Do you plan on having us start off as basic rank 1 characters?

Ninja live by code of Honor. Magical Girl live by code of Love. This lead to many disaster and much destruction of urban area.

Honor much safer.

JKDs stupid special feature is kinda overpowering to anyone who has
to code it too, lemme tell ya.

I had planned to start as starting characters and then build as the
tourney progresses.

Then give out some xp to represent whatever you ppl do between
tourneys, and then do another one w00t.

It's kind of overwhelming to due it my old way, or rinaldos way, but
hopefully the new way I'm trying will pretty much let it run on it's
own.

It's really long overdue, I'm surprised no one has done this yet!
