No, I think very much and this ages stuff become very hard to manage, difficult
decisions, and manuvers, a year ago I make a with good results a rank 1
tournament the Gateway, and I think why not make something like that again?

Alright Rinaldo, if you want to do a new tournament, I'll all for it. But
I want to keep using Billy, so tell me what I need to change on him. I need
to make him a Rank 9? Is there anything else I need to do?

It's a rank 1 tournment, not a rank 9.
Just use the rules right from the sourcebook to create a fresh new
fighter.

Subject: Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Forgive me for being behind the times... but my wife (God love her) decided
to bring me back a Christmas present from her business trip to Houston. Her
gift was a Sega Dreamcast complete with Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Mental note:
worship wife.

Anyhoo. I am physically incapable of playing a fighting game without
looking for new characters to convert to Street Fighter. Unfortunately, I
don't recognize, um, anyone. I don't want to convert any of the
superhero-types, as my players are all comic book geeks and would
immediately lynch me if I unknowingly matched then against, say, Psylocke
and Wolverine.

So. Can someone who knows where all 56(!) of the fighters are pulled from
tell me who is from where? Or at least divvy them into Marvel and Capcom
camps so I can avoid adapting the supers.

tenks!

I think Rank One is fine. The characters won't exactly
have a surplus of Special Maneuvers, but you can get
by with just a few. And when you actually earn enough
XP for those flashy moves, you'll appreciate them
more.

My only suggestion is that the fights be divided into
shorter rounds like 10 turns. It's hard (and a bit
foolish) to plan tactics for 20 turns...

Well I stop this tournament, because I think this too much power to me manage,
many powerfull moves many dices, the things escape from my control I think in
rank 1 because is more easier to manage and the fighters can upgrade their stats
with exp points, of course this much better at last I think. :).

Can we give our characters Flaws (as from other White Wolf games) for
extra Freebie points? I generally use either the appropriate ones from
the Vampire/Werewolf player's guide.

Could we use our Gateway Characters in this?

Hey! It's called Strategy, which is hard to make with a Rank 1 fighter. Oh well. Higher ranked characters are harder to handle, but it does invite discussion about Maneuvers, which is great. Low ranks are simpler, I agree.

You'd better be getting her something pretty spiffy for Christ's Mas, dude. A

Due to my awe inspiring lack of Japanese language skills, I have never played a
lot of the Japanese-only games that these characters are drawn from. But I've
never let my own ignorance stop me before so here it goes:

Amingo - Unknown Japanese Only Game (Capcom) Can anyone confirm this and/or
name the game?
Anakaris - Darkstalkers (Capcom)
Blackheart - Marvel Super Heroes (Marvel)
Bulleta aka Baby Bonnie Hood and B. B. Hood - Darkstalkers 3 (Capcom)
Cable - First game appearance (Marvel)
Cammy - SSF2 (Capcom)

Subject: Xtreme Fighting: Match #1
The house lights dim and an announcer's voice kicks
in.
"Ladies and gentlemen, Xtreme Fighting is about to
begin! Introducing first, from Scotland... He's the
Hard-Hitting Highlander looking to Hand out some Hurt,
representing the style of Muay Thai Kickboxing...
Gordon MacAdams!"

MacAdams enters the fenced-in hexagon wearing a kilt
in his family colors, with his wrists and ankles
wrapped in tape. The audience gives him a mixture of
polite claps and fierce booing. He sneers back at them
in defiance. At ringside, his brother Butch shouts
encouragement.

"And now, a man who needs no introduction. He is the
former World Savate Champion, and a veteran of
Ultimate Kickboxing. A native of France, representing
the art of Savate, Yves LaChance!"

The audience erupts in a deafening roar for the
hometown hero. He comes to the ring with a coach and a
trainer; all three are wearing red white and blue, and
the trainer bears the flag of France. LaChance removes
his robe, revealing red white and blue trunks. He is
bare-handed and bare-footed.

The referee moves the fighters to their starting
positions, stands back, and signals for the bell. An
announcer calls the action:

"MacAdams slowly advances; LaChance gestures for him
to come closer, showing no fear! MacAdams steps in
with an elbow, but LaChance blocks it and fires back a
kick to the midsection! Unfazed, MacAdams leaps up and
drives a knee into his opponent's jaw! Shrugging it
off, LaChance cinches MacAdams around the waist for a
suplex attempt, but the wily Scot drives him off with
an elbow to the face!

"LaChance stumbles and tries to retreat, but MacAdams
leaps at him with another knee! LaChance recovers in
time to partially block it, and again answers with a
kick, connecting with the Scotsman's ribs! MacAdams
grimaces with pain and fires back an elbow, but
LaChance blocks it effortlessly!

"LaChance throws a kick past MacAdams' head. The Muay
Thai fighter grins and chambers his leg for a
roundhouse... but LaChance's heel arcs back and hits
the back of MacAdams' head! Impossibly, he remains
standing, and his roundhouse connects with LaChance's
head! He tries to finish with an elbow, but LaChance
retreats a few steps, looking concerned...

"Smiling like a hyena, MacAdams dashes forward and
brings up his knee... but LaChance surprises him with
a lightning-quick kick to the temple that makes a
resounding 'smack' audible throughout the arena!
MacAdams hits the ground like a sack of potatoes!
LaChance wins by knock-out!"

The referee calls for the bell, and raises LaChance's
hand in victory. The audience explodes, giving their
champion a standing ovation. Gordon's brother tries to
rush the ring, but is held back by several burly
security guards. He is shouting obscenities at
LaChance, who is trying to smile and ignore him. Only
when LaChance has safely left the ring is Butch
allowed to check on his unconscious brother.

Later, the staff doctor announces that MacAdams has
suffered bruised ribs, but shows no signs of
concussion or neck trauma. He is advised to take some
aspirin and avoid strenuous activity.

Next Match:
Luc "Asteryon" Radonie
VS
Ryuji "The Hammer" Yokahama

PS: Happy Holidays Everybody!

Group: streetfighter Message: 10140 From: Steve Karstensen Date: 12/27/2000
Subject: Oh, well.
Can't win 'em all, I guess.

Caught Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon last night. One word: Over-hyped.

Without launching into a tirade, as I can't say I *totally* disliked it, I
wasn't really that hooked by the whole experience.

The Good: Beautiful sets and scenery, great acting, no hokey dialogue, and a
flowing, majestic quality that speaks of the tremendous talent assembled for
this movie, both on- and off-screen. Good translation from Mandarin if not
letter-perfect, and the story wasn't as convoluted as most martial arts
movies. Very good drama.
And, of course, the fights were something to behold, particularly some of
the camerawork on the trick shots.

The Bad: The cameraman tended to zoom in on the combat. As a result, it was
often difficult to see just what the hell was going on, and he kept jumping
around trying to get whoever was attacking in the shot.
The movie was also VERY slowly-paced and probably could have benefitted from
some more time in the editing room without losing coherency. The flashback
in which Jen and Lo cemented their relationship was far too long for its
relevancy to the plot (minor).

The Ugly: The audience I saw this film with was not there to see an Asian
drama; they were there to see Chow Yun Fat bust a Bruce Lee on someone's
ass. In other words, other than a scattering of Chinese there to appreciate
an artistic film, the theatre was filled with teenagers and twentysomethings
who were most likely drunk off their asses, as they found the (excessive)
wirework far funnier than it should have been. Speaking of the wirework, it
*was* excessive, and apart from some nice useage of the character's flying
abilities it came off as contrived and, at times, a little ridiculous. Li
Bu Mai (Chow Yun Fat) actually strikes a "Superman" fist-forward pose as he
leaps off the ground at one point. While on one hand the (graceful) flying
characters enhances the overall flow and beauty of the film, it's kind of
hard to take it seriously when the whole theatre is lauging at Shu Lien
(Michelle Yeoh) leaping from rooftop to rooftop and running up walls.

In addition, there were several obvious moments of comic relief that were
entirely out-of-place, like when the Wudan monks tried to pick a fight with
Jen and she trashed them (and the inn they were fighting in) in the process.

My wife, who read the novel this film was based on when she was in Junior
High, and is a big fan of same, was also a bit disappointed in the
inaccuracy of the film's adaptation of the book and its characters. But
overall, she enjoyed it.

I give it three stars outta five.

    BWaHAHAHAHAH!!!

Tho, that reminds me of a family picture of me and my folks way back when I
was 8... I'll see if I can dig it out and post it... it was a family
gathering, four generations of my family on my mother's side:
My Great Grandfather was Japanese, my Great Grandmother was Scottish... no
    problem.
My Grandfather was Welsh, and Grandmother was Nikkei... looked very Japanese
    actually.
My Father was Irish-Cheyenne (1/4), my Mother looks somewhat Nikkei, though
she's only occasionally mistaken for Japanese (happened in Quebec...
    heheheh)
My Brother (3 years old at the time) somewhat looks Nikkei, you can see a
    strong resemblance.
Then there's me: Blue eyes, copper hair, totally Scotch/Welsh looking
(family jokes that I'm adopted) wearing slightly oversized kimono and
hakama. Absolutely no resemblance to any family member in the photo at all.
None. I look like set dressing. My mother used to pull it out for her
friends and they'd all point and laugh.

On second thought, maybe I won't post it.

School: Chinese National Wu Shu Academy
    Stable: ISKA Kickboxing
Signature: Gives an exaggerated bow and smiles.

Image: Young, muscular Wu Shu prodigy turned
    Kickboxer.

Background: Johnny was enrolled in the Academy at a
young age, and became one of the best students the
teachers had seen in several generations. They had
high hopes for him, and when he won his first National
Wu Shu tournament, they knew he was a true champion.

But success got to Johnny's head, and he changed. He
developed a mean streak, which led to his "indefinite
suspension" from Wu Shu competition. Eager to continue
fighting, Johnny went to the ISKA to become a
Kickboxer. His spectacular kicking ability and
acrobatic style made him an instant crowd favorite,

Playing Johnny: You are the best Wu Shu fighter in the

secretly you despise all other fighters and feel that

Well Tony, I've got two French NPCs thus far. One is Marie Fontaine, a
savateur and The other is the Marquis, currently my only NPC using my
home-brewed French Ninjutsu style. If you or, heck, anyone else on this list
      wants any, let me know.

Well, it won't be in time for the game I'm running on Monday, but I could
probably use Marie at some point. Thanks for the response.

      Happy new year to all,

Strange how it goes. I've just been through some of the preliminaries in
my Street Fighter tournament - Millennium Warrior Tournament, sponsored by
the Golden Fist Dojo - and I've been reflecting a bit about how certain
NPCs seem to behave no matter what you do.

For instance, let's consider a rank 5 character I've called "Immolator".
      He's a Fire Elemental, he's got a bit of punches, and generally he's a
nasty character. He should be good at what he's doing - at least initially
(he's not very big on honor).

He loses to player characters that are built on far less XP than he is.
      Nothing seems to work, really.

Then, let's consider the rank 6 ninja I built - Shaitan - which is a very
nasty customer. **** in Punch, very good physical attributes, and all the
special Ninjutsu punches, added with very good combos. XP-wise, he's a
      monster.

He got his ass kicked by a character with about 40 xp less on the clock
than himself. And that's what, like the second or third time he gets KO'd
by someone that - theoretically, at least - should be far less proficient
      than him. Hmf.

And then there's the other side of the coin. I've got an NPC that
consistently kicks the PC's asses - even though he's not really that
powerful. The dice just seems to roll his way, really. Bah.

And that sort of got me thinking. I'm sure that you've all seemed to
encounter things that seem out of place. For instance, the jinxed PC or
NPC. No matter how skilled that particular character was at something, it
ALWAYS failed. Usually critically, if at all possible. And then there's
the jinxed PC or NPC - but totally opposite. EVERYTHING works.

Or like in Shadowrun. As long as my character kept using heavy pistols
(that's a Desert Eagle to all you non-Shadowrunning people), he rolled
well. But when he used shotguns and whatnots, he rolled far less
successes. EVEN THOUGH HE WAS JUST AS SKILLED WITH THEM!

Bah. It's all probably very esoteric.

I should probably post the characters I made for the Millennium Warrior
tournament, but I'm just out of time right now. Gotta go catch a few winks
before we'll link Diablo II tomorrow ;-)

Having never used Elementals, I don't know how well
they balance, but in my experience Punchers don't do
as well as Kickers, and Grabbers are the best. Does he
have Rekka Ken? Fist Sweep? Hyper Fist?

Boshi-Ken is weak and Shuto is seldom useful, but
Shikan-Ken is great for use against Grabs... again,
Kicks generally do more damage, and Grabs are the best
way to take control of a match. You HAVE to use
Heelstamp (awesome maneuver) and if you throw in Eye
Rake, Disengage and Dislocate Limb, your PCs will
learn to fear the Ninja called Shaitan!

The dice are ultimately in control, and no amount of
number-crunching will eliminate the element of chance,
but there are plenty of easy (and low-point-cost) ways
to dramatically increase a character's potential for
      success. Start with Jump :)

heh heh heh. Reminds me of how last night's game went. We've started up my
campaign again, and last night was a tournament I've held off doing since we
last finished. One of the players is a powerful Thai kickboxer who may be
rank 2 but he's the equivalent of a rank 5 in skill. Anyways, one of the
members of the opposing team was a SLOW (Dex 1) turtle hybrid aptly named
"Speedy". I would just like to take a moment and point out that such a name
can really be a psychological advantage as the players spent the first ten
minutes of setting up the map debating as to whether Speedy would be slow,
as predicted, and his name was in sarcasm, or whether he would freak them
out and be really fast beyond all stereotype.

They weren't expecting the Zen No Mind or Maka Wara.

      Anyway.

Speedy KO'd the kickboxer in two hits. Zen No Mind to Tearing Bite. Six
successes each hit, leaving his partner to face both opponents.

      Subject: New Blood: Diego Ruiz
Here's another New Blood fighter, my master capoierista, Diego Ruiz. This is
also what I would call a exponent of "true" capoeira, as opposed to the more
video-game-based capoeira presented in the main sourcebooks. Many of you
will not recognize some of the techniques listed in his Manuevers. These are
mostly denoted in my sourcebook, New Legends found at:
      http://members.tripod.com/~dare2live/sfpage.html

Blow off the dust and see if it still flies.

      -------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Diego Ruiz

      Age: 26
      Style: Capoeira

      History
Diego grew up on the rough streets of Huizado, a town on the edge of the
Brazilian rainforest. With no family other than his chronically ill mother,
Carmelita, he was forced to steal what they needed to survive.
One day, he tried to pick the pocket of a newcomer in town, a tall, wiry
man with a young girl in tow. Diego was caught, but instead of being taken
to the police, the man asked him his name.
I am Diego Ruiz, senor. the eleven-year-old replied.
The man broke into a good-natured smile. Well, Diego. he said. I am
Jesus Selgado. It seems we were destined to meet.
The boy was intrigued. What do you mean, senor?
Well, is it not obvious? I am in need of someone to work for me, and you
are apparently in need of money?
Work? Diego had tried to get a decent job before, but no one in the ton
      would hire a poor boy.
In my academia. Jesus broke into an even wider smile. Tell me, Diego,
have you ever heard of capoeira?
Mestre Selgado had come to Huizado to open a academia, a school, where he
would teach capoeira, the traditional dance/martial art of Brazil. He put
the young Diego to work helping him build and maintain a meager classroom.
He paid him with a small amount of coin, all he could afford to pay, and by
teaching him the basics of capoeira. At the same time, Diego became friends
with Mestre Selgados young daughter Graciela.
By the time he was sixteen, not only was Diego able to care for his mother
adequately, without having to resort to thievery, but he had also become
Selgados best student. Mestre Selgados lessons had taught the boy much; as
capoeira was more music and rhythm than violence, so did Diego learn that
life was not pure struggle, but a rather a dance with fast and slow beats.
Ten years later, now a man and married to his Mestre's daughter
Graciela, Deigo has decided to make his mark on the world by exhibitrng his
skill in Capoeira in the Street fighting circuit. He has a hidden agenda,
though: He wants to be able to provide for his wife and the prize money
offered for each victory is more than tempting. Diego cares little about the
underworld war against Shadoloo, and thinks only of his family and village.

      Playing Diego
You are a smooth, fast talker, brimming with charm and wit. You generally
wisecrack a lot and occasionally shoot your mouth off. You are an
irrepressibly saucy young man who feels that life is too serious to be taken
      too seriously.
Your attitude has been tempered by the loss of your mother years ago, but
also by the fierce love and devotion your wife, Graciela, who disapproves of
      street fighting. For the most part you are a loving and responsible husband;
you made a promise that you would never do anything to hurt her. At the same
time, you feel that there are some things that a woman just cant understand
about a mans pride, and therefore allow yourself to make the occasional
trip on the world wide street fighting circuit. By winning tournaments, you
hope to use the prize money to help your village and provide a good home for
      your family.
No one ever said that being a hero had to be boring.

      Appearance
Diego is of average height for a Brazilian. Dark-skinned and stocky, but
with well-defined musculature. Outside the ring, he usually wears an indigo
tank top, white trousers that are cuffed at the ankles, and black polished
shoes. He wears a bandanna over his mop of black dreadlocks, and is almost
never without a gray fedora with a black band that his mestre gave him, as
well as a cocky smile on his face. But all three come off in the ring.
In a match, he usually wears the traditional loose white trousers with the
cordao of rank around the waist. But as is sometimes the case with the
Street Fighter Tournament, a bit of flash is occasionally needed. His
exhibition outfit is a pair of baggy purple trousers with a matching vest.

      Quote
Se voc comear fazer algo, o amigo, f-lo com estilo(If you gotta do
something, man, do it with style).
