Subject: Re: [streetfighter] Re: The Timeline.
I got this information from videogames.com's Complete Guide to Street
Fighter (http://www.videogames.com/features/universal/sfhistory/index.html)

An single line from Lee's bio:
"The son of Gen has had a hard life."

I don't exactly know how official these bio's are, but I tend to use them
when it comes to existing SF character, unless the games contradict it. The
games will always have the upper hand.

Yun and Yang (and this is official from Capcom, not just the Guide mentioned
earlier), were raised by thier grandfather. According to the Guide, it's
rumored that they were trained by Gen. I think they are likely to be the
sons of Lee, though honestly that's just my own feelings. I don't believe at
all that Chun Li is related to Lee.

another shoto-clone with a few extra moves, but he would not be more

Isn't Sheng Long just the original American name for Gouken? Akuma's original
name while Super turbo was being worked on was Gouki Long, BTW, and I read
something about him and Gouken being brothers, or something to that effect.

Subject: Re: ryu and bison same powers
It can't be, ryu and bison powers are similar?, Whoa! no way.
Ryu powers came from the shotokan arts, and if bison powers was given
to him theirs no way their powers can be the same, besides the
animated movie didn't show it or the manga comic book, I guess
everybody in capcom make up some crazy storyline? I don't know who to
belive?. Well, I think every fighters have their own potential and
techniques. Ryu and Ken are different fighters same art, but both
change their fighting style. Ryu same traditonal style and ken well
all I can say is he's change the traditonal.

If hadoken power and the psycho power are the same why not akuma and
ken was chosen by bison, why ryu?, cuz he's was stronger is that it
or because his power level was equal to his? akuma power is greater
than ryu and ken, why not go after him to increase his psycho powers.

Ok thats what I thought. That is the only place that mentions that.
On top of that I found several other inaccuracies at videogames.com
so I wouldnt exactly put it forth as fact. I actually asked someone at
capcom about Gen and Yun and yang.

He said no, but thought it would be kinda neat. (maybe he was hinting at
something. or hatchng an idea.

Maybe it got lost in the translation.
Maybe it was supposed to say "You must defeat my Dragon Punch to stand a
chance" but the exchange student who CAPCOM hired on co-op translated it to
"You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance"

Yes? No?

The point is that they could have avoided the contradiction by simply
advancing the story...maybe introducing some new characters, and simplying
sitting down for an hour and a half to figure out what should go on between
the main characters.

Re-designing the first game...again...was a waste of their time.

He's probably known as Chen Yuen Lung (Cheng Long) in Cantonese.  Nearly every Chinese version of Jackie's films I've seen have been in Cantonese (as they're out of Hong Kong, where, I believe, Cantonese is the major dialect spoken).  However, since the spellings between Cantonese and Mandarin are often VERY different (Mao Zedong versus Mao Tse-Tung, for example) it wouldn't surprise me if Cheng Long was how it translated out in Mandarin.  Interesting note; like English, a lot of words that are spelled differently in Chinese are pronounced the same.  So Lung sounds the same as Long, for all intents and purposes.

Speaking of, Robert; I asked my wife about Bruce Lee last night.  Lee Jun Fan is his given name, and Lee Shao Long is his stage name.  His Western name, of course, is Bruce Lee.

Another amusing bit;  when Jackie was younger, his classmates referred to him as "Big Nose".  His parents, on the other hand, called him "Pao-Pao" (little cannonball).  Oddly enough, my wife has started referring to me as such since my job is causing me to get a little pudgy.  *sigh*...

True, and since that's were he is from/grew up, that is what I base my statement on.

No doubt true.

Yes. I suppose this supports the "Shen Long" statement.    Amusing.

Ninjitsu isn't that bad, compared to the other martial arts that were
around at the time. I'm talking of course strictly of the Taijutsu part of
ninjitsu, excluding the stealth and survival arts. It is a reasonable art
but it is more gimmicky and cheap, remember, ninjas who were confronted
more often than not just wanted a window to escape.
Group: streetfighter Message: 7496 From: Steve Karstensen Date: 5/25/2000
Subject: Re: [streetfighter] Wierd weapons
Well, naturally. the combat part of ninjitsu was a methodical practice
of "how can I achieve my goal by force if an alternate method is
unavailable?" it was far more than mere taijutsu.

a ninjitsu master would often incorporate methods into his fighting that
are simply not part of their taijutsu. In keeping with the spirit of
using your TOYS, ninja would do things like, oh, grab a rock while
cartwheeling away from their opponent and then winging it at him. Not
exactly part of a 'martial art' but highly effective nonetheless.

ninja were not martial artists, but their "anything goes" method of
approaching an obstacle made them far more dangerous than any swordsman.
this translates to Street Fighter by allowing a ninja to do anything he
damn well pleases and not care about losing Honor, which often causes
problems for players fighting them.

You can find submission guidelines at the end of WP #4, and I feel that I'm
pretty easy going on submissions. My major thing with submissions is that
character and maneuvers should be as in the books.
For example, a maneuver would be:

Maneuver Name
Prerequisites
Power Points
Description
System
Cost
Speed
Damage
Move

and for character submissions, simply seperate them as they are in the
books. The same format isn't required, but a text character submission would
look something like this:

Name
Style
School
Stable
Team
Concept
Signature

Strength
Dexterity

and so on and so on. When it comes to abilities, please seperate them
between talents, skills, and knowledges, and include any languages the
character knows. Also, give notes on backgrounds when possible.

>I may have just the things, when are the subbies due?

I've never had a definate date on submissions, but I would preferably
recieve them before the
15th of next month.

hey, guys!
Please, sometimes, understand that you're arguing about the american
versions!!!
If you read japanese (as it's my humble case), you'd knew better!
The master of Ken and Ryû is not ShengLong (that's Jackie Chan, it was a
joke), he is Gôken, brother of Gôki (Akuma in American Versions).
Every crap of text in every fighting game I ever saw was translated so bad
that it could have been written by a one-eyed monkey (with arthrisis). Sorry
to make my point clear, but the REAL storyline is only in Japanese.

gomen nasai, my friend. ;)

I agree, a lot of times the 'message' is lost in the translation. It's
one of the reasons I shy away from a lot of Japanese games that rely
heavily on story.

...and I can't imagine what the people at Capcom were smoking when they
decided to turn the SFA3 announcer into a game show host.

Sorry, but some of us have neither the time, nor inclination to learn to
read japanese in order to understand video games (some of my friends know
japanese and they tell me how badly some anime is translated)

I think he's kind of amusing, when he says "you have fists of god" it
sounds like he's saying "you have pissed off god!" And I used to play with
Guy a lot, so when he says "Beat em up guy" I thought it was character
specific, I know, dumb me. . . . .

yea, it's odd. Seems like all the translators are trying to say "Man"
and it comes out as "guy". Like "Beat 'em up, man!", which sounds
worlds better.

The Drunken Master (my favorite Kung Fu movie of ALL time) does this a
lot. The crappy dialogue is half the fun:

"Good guy, leave now!"

"Hey old guy, you're pretty tough!"

You're talking about the Jackie Chan Drunken Master? That is probably my
favorite Kung Fu movie of all time, except the version I have is in chinese
with English and Chinese subtitles. It's a great movie, that was back when
Jackie was just a Kung Fu GOD. I miss movies with just long strings of
fight scenes, completely ignoring any concept of a plot. . . . .

yea, that's the one. Cantonese dialogue (which to this day screws up my
pronunciations in Mandarin) with Chinese/English subtitles.
Badly-translated subtitles.

Depending on which version you buy, though, you either get the whole
thing or it's edited to shit. I have both, fortunately.

A better example of Drunken Fist can be found in the cheezy ripoff title
"Jackie Chan's Drunken Fist Boxing", which bills itself as a sequel to
Drunken Master. In reality, apart from using some clips from the
original, Jackie appears nowhere in the film. :P Simon Yuen (Su-Hua
Chi) reprises his role, though, with two new students. One of them uses
Drunken Fist at the Big Climactic Fight Scene(tm) at the end, and it's
*really* weird to watch.

Whoa. I had no idea. My account's been screwy lately, so I haven't gotten
any messages. Who's producing it: SNK or Capcom?

Just a quick question.
Whats the difference between your egroup Streetfighter mailing list and this

I'm guessing that this guy means the Streetfighter GAMES... or
something. It sounds a bit strange that someone starts a competing group
:)
