Subject: Re: Story ideas
My latest short-run Street Fighter game took the PC's to mainland China to
break up a Triad slavery ring that kidnapped a young girl from America who
was born with the knowledge of Great Wall of China kick (and other fabulous
kicks) and sold her to a mysterious Chinese mystic who planned on draining
her of her knowledge to increase his own power (Lo Pan? Nope, almost). The
trail led them to Australia then to China where they had to fight the Triad
leaders in a honest-to-god STREET fight to find out where the slaves were
located. Busted up that operation and found the clues that led them deep
mainland to an ancient haunted temple on a small mountain in the deep
forest where they had to fight a horde of knife-wielding ninja-types to stop
the bad guy in 5 turns or less before he learned the deadly secrets.

Unfortunately, being players, one player found a back way in through a
window and snuck past the gaurds to interrupt and fight the bad guy before
he could finish. Actually, it was very clever and smart of him. Only one
could do it because the windows were too small for the others. So while the
rest were busy with knife-wielding thugs, the little guy was constantly
aborting to Jumps to avoid getting hit by the bad guys 16 dice Dragon
Punches.

Only regret was that I shoulda gave the big bad guy 20 health instead of 10.
The fight would have been a lot more desperate for the players (it was tough
for them already having taken 4-5 aggravated damage each before the big
fight, bit not QUITE tough enough IMO).

Other story ideas I've run in the past included Bison Empire warriors from
the future are summoned by Bison's Order of Heavenly Unity big guy to help
him in a coup. The PC's are then tasked by good-guy resistance fighters from
the future to stop them before they ruin the world. The idea being that in
the future, Bison's empire lasts 50 years but crumbles and the rebels win.
However, the OHU guy is using his knowledge of the future to defeat Bison
prematurely and HIS empire will last generations and the Rebels will never
win. So, in effect, the PC's are forced to help Bison in order to save the
bad future from a worse one.

In other words, the best way to create Street Fighter chronicles is to steal
steal steal.

Guys-

Okay, due to lack of availability, thee will be no game tonight. However
since most of the ready players have Spring Break next week. I will push
for a tentative Wednesday April 7th playdate and hopefully an earlier
starting time. If such a time is not possible, then I will opt for that
Saturday at 10 Eastern Central. These dates are all subject to change,
of course. My life is so erratic that I don't really know what I'm doing
tommorrow, let alone aweek and a half from now.

Anywho, we are still at a juncture point, so if anyone wishes to join,
now's a good time. Rules for character submission remian the same:

Rank Five characters, using the Pregenerated Rank tables posted oh so
many times to this list.

All characters must be submitted for approval no less than three days
before the playdate (this Sunday by Midnight is ideal).

No Damage Machine combo monsters, the reason why not are fairly obvious,
and anyone who tries to "slip one past" will be dealt with accordingly
within the confines of the game. :)

Hope to see you at the rumble,

Darrick, Online Storyteller

While on that. You weren't on the list when I jumped that rule last time
but I find it too boring to be true if one can avoid any attack (Speed,
I know) by simply jumping away. We (my players thought it was reasonable
and they were just as annoyed as I was) decided to raise the bar
slightly. In order to abort to a Jump to avoid anything but projectiles
(important!) one must roll Wits + Atletics against the attacker's
Dexterity + Technique, and the jumping fighter must win! If he doesn't
he does not spend the WP to abort but he is done for the turn. If he
succeeds the usual rules apply.

The main reason for this was to give wrestlers a fair chance. They kept
getting smeared, every single fight.

Hit me with a draft asap dammit! My Easter break started 8 hours ago!!!

I was working on Kung Fu sub-styles myself a while back but I scrapped
the idea. Then I went on to creating "Art of ..."-moves specific for
each style, used like Psychokinetic Channeling giving bonuses in a way
that reminded of the Style, but i scrapped that one too.

But I still got some material lying around and I've also got a pal who's
currently doing a special assigment on Kung Fu. So: ask me.

Not wishing to re-start a dead argument, I'll just point my POV on the
subject and not respond any further.

You raise some excellent points regarding wrestlers, but in our campaign, we
maintained Cartwheel Kick and aborting to Jumps were the best and ultimate
defeat for them, toning them down a notch. Rolling against jumping makes
Cartwheel kickers tougher. Useful against all straight-line attacks.

Hmm, don't know what to say about wrestlers. They suck in our campaign too.
One player/GM (we alternate GM'ing the campaign and share bad
guys/locations/etc. There's about 5 of us GM's, each with seperate campaigns
too, there are, all told, about 30 actual PC's fighting against the same
stable of bad guys and each other) said he was going to experiment with
nimble fast wrestlers next time around, just to see how effective they are.

Thanks. I also did a cute little 2-night adventure where the PC's have to
rescue a kidnapped orphan boy from unscrupulous corporate types who are
holding him ransom in exchange for Don Hogan's Outback Orphanage. They want
to buy his land and turn Walkabout Canyon into a giant uranium strip-mine.
The PC's have to break into the open pit mine and fight truck-drivers and
workers in: (a) huge mining trucks, the kind with 12-foot tires (b) the
steel walkways over the ore processing chemical vats (c) the terraces of the
huge mine.

Most of the coolest Street Fighter adventures I've come up with usually
conclude in 2 to 4 sessions and really have that campy Jackie Chan
action-movie feel. I love this game!

In what other game can you emulate:

Jackie Chan acrobatic action
Mortal Kombat mystical violence
4-color superheroics
Hollywood action blockbusters
traditional Kung-Fu movies
Miami-Vice coolness and rhythm
San Francisco noir crime stories
and gritty cyberpunkish Mean Streets all in the same setting and game?

I am realizing more and more how lucky I was not to get hold og Players
Guide and that blasted Cartwheel Kick when I started up SF.

And my view of a move that makes you go "shit, that move is too good to
be true!" is: it is to good to be true so now I'm bringing it down to
earth.

Example: Scissor Kick got raised to 2 (!) Willpower and I think I docked
Move one point.

And btw. I hade already made stats for the Jun (Tekken 2) style
Cartwheel Kick (Butterfly Cartwheel Kick?):

Cartwheel Kick
Prerequisites: Kick , Athletics
Power Points: Capoeira, Wu Shu 2; Kung Fu, Special Forces, Western
Kickboxing 3; Any 4
A very potent maneuver indeed, able to knock opponents flat if they
don't expect it coming. The fighter simply wheels forward, some even do
it without touching the ground with their hands. Whilst wheeling the
fighter bring her legs down on the adversary, first one, then the other.
Many an opponent do not get back up.
System: The Cartwheel Kick connects twice and is not Aerial, although
it inflicts a Knockdown on those who are.
Cost: 1 Willpower
Speed: -1
Damage: +2
Move: -2

Well.

Oh yeah! Fast nimble wrestlers, or more precisely Native American
Wrestlers who rely on Speed, Special Forces gitz who always tend to be
on the fast side (Dex never below 3 at least) and Spanish Ninjas with
Suplex can beat almost anything.

Imagine how popular a Spanish Ninja would be with Dex 5 and a Backflip
Kick to Slide Kick to Suplex Combo. Not so...

As a general rule 'White' styles of Kung Fu are Imperial styles,
those developed for or with the royal family. They are more showy and
made more for defense than attack.
Crane itself is a defensive style using a one-legged stance,
white crane is even more so. Angles of attack and "revolving force" are
important. This means the white crane stylist attacks from hi or low,
evading a block or deflection from his opponent and is constantly in
motion moving around the opponent.

Crane, aka Bok Pai, Hok Yang, Hork Yang, Ba Fan, Fann Tzu, Fantzu
Hao Chuan a southern external style based on the movements of the crane.
Tibetan white crane, as opposed to Fukeinese white crane from the Shaolin
Temple, is called pale-hoc in Chinese. It stems from the Tibetan Lama, or
Hop Gar martial system.

Oh thanks Ive got quite a bit on the original shotokan. Im putting an
ettiqutte section
and am listing Ginchin Funakoshi's 6 ...rules? I dont think there rules but
Ill cal them that for now.
I actully use them in my SF campaigns. The shotokan warriors have to kow
them by heart
or atleast have them written on the sheet. :) Kinda fun
If you wanna add anything Ill put it in.

    * "Advantages" was typoed on all the characters sheets.

    * On the Jumping Double-hit Kick thing it said: "Hits crouching only

No. If I told my friends I had a SF LARP lying around, they'd put me in

    P.S. SF LARP sounded neat.

Err....Well I wasnt looking for spelling maistakes now but the sonner the
    better.
I simply made the sheets and copyed them 8 or so times so any mistake on 1
    is a mistake on all.

Ahyh yyes thats true. I made that move very quickly at the end. What its
supposed to say is hits standing individuals once. It has no effect on
    crouching.
Its supposed to be in the similair vein of a double hit kick hitting aerial
    or crouching once.

I have to fix the Ryu and Ken Background. I found a picture on the Capcom
website showing young Ryu, Ken and Guy as friends. I want the background to
    reflect that.

    2. Train in heart and in soul without training in worry about thiery.

How 'bout we pull off some serious copyright violations and scan all the
darn books in 100dpi grayscale (or black/white even) and pass 'em
      around.

I could go through the trouble of scanning Perfect Warrior. My other two
books are too scribbled with corrections to be of interrest (or?). Well,
maybe Secrets isn't that violated but...

I would benefit from this stunt 'cos I lack Players Guide, Contenders
and the Screen. And I've been playing for 2 years without 'em.

But... where could they be posted?

I'm gonna start scrounging the web for these damn books. SF is a great
game. In fact, it was one of the first RPs I got into after AD&D. I regret
having the opporuntity to purchase these books. I remember pre-ordering the
SF RPG (I'm a Fighting Game, RPG, and Martial Art nut so this fits into a
nice neat package :)), and the game was more than I ever expected. I got
the Shadoloo sourcebook later, but never bothered to purchase any of the
others. I tried Amazon.Com, with no luck (despite the fact they have them
listed), and they gave me back a letter saying the book is out of print.
I'm gonna send an email to white-wolf, and see what they say. Also, has
anyone ever thought of doing an online SF Campaign, thru IRC or something?
      That's all.

Probably bad translation, I've trained with Funikoshi's personal
students, & they don't say stuff about any rules, Just the basic
principles of budo. The philosophy of Shotokan is derived a lot from
Judo, & Aikido, Funikoshi made it Karatedo, & not just Karate.
So even Funikoshi's Students don't teach the "6 rules", just the code
of Budo (more or less Chivalry).

Hey, there is a on line campaign, Darrick's running it, so post
something to him on the list, we're playing this week, & he said new

Well, every live action & animated movie, comic book, and animated series,
has put Ryu and Ken as buddy-buddy in various degrees. There was even that
2-on-1 against Bison in one of the 2d games (can't remember which).

The series on USA had one episode staring the Hagar & the boys, friends of
      Ryu... but only tolerated Ken.

Ryon is an extremely muscular individual. He stands a scant inch below 6
foot, and has a large frame. His piercing blue-green eyes, and short,
sharply cut brown hair cause even the most resolved opponents to quiver. He
wears a sleeveless, white Taekwondo dobok, trimmed in black. A black belt
is worn around his waist, with Korean lettering running down the sides.

Hey, does anyone know where I could find translations of SNK Fighters (Fatal
Fury/King of Fighters), specifically Kim Kaphwan. Has anyone considered
      doing these? Thanks.

Im sorry to doubt you but where do you gain your information from?
as I understand it Ken constantly trys to find ryu to fight. But there both
students of gouken, which makes the martial arts brothers. I keep trying to get
info from capcom but dont know who to talk to.

Ive gained the listed codes of conduct from Funakoshi's book
      Karate-do My way of life.
They were also reprinted in a martial arts encyclopedia I have.
I thought Karatedo had a more samurai style attitude?

Yes Ive noticed that. In all the endings for the SF games Ken and Ryu are
always acting like friends. The seem to give each other cheap shots everyonce
in a while, like when you
play Ken in SFA2 and meet ryu, but at the end there always friends.
